Japanese Tea House
Philadelphia, PA
Built in the shoin-zuruki style, this masterpiece of 17th century
Japanese architecture is composed of cypress posts,
mulberry-paper walls, hinoki-bark roof, tatami mat floors,
and not a single, structural nail.
Built in Japan in 1954 and presented to the Museum of Modern Art
in New York as a token of post-war friendship. In 1958, it was moved
to Philadelphia, and the Sano Tansai-designed garden was added.
O&N oversaw all renovation and restoration work, which involved
mostly Japanese craftsmen, landscape artists,
and discreetly designed modern amenities.
